The Gregory Weber Lang Foundation
In Gregory's Words...
How long have you had cancer?
---It's hard to say. When I was diagnosed in September of 05' they weren't sure how long it
had been there. It's a very slow progressing cancer and it was/is at stage 4, which is the stage
in which it spreads to other parts of the body. They said I've had it maybe for 5, 6, 7+ years.
The chemotherapy I went through, 6 months, didn't work in curing it. It helped to slow the
progression down but as soon as I was done with the chemo they found a spot in my hip.
What is a typical day like for you?
--- I get up at 15 minutes to 6 AM every Monday through Friday to go to school. Once I get home
at 2 I try to spend some time with Brianna, but it depends on what she has going on, like work
and other things. After that I relax a little, hang out with my family till dinner between 7 and 8.
After that I go on the computer for a few minutes, then watch some TV in bed.
Do you have to take any special medications or go to the doctor often..does that affect a
typical day?
--- I take an anti-anxiety med once a day to help me with reality. I never noticed how grumpy I
had been until I went on it. I had to trust my family that I really needed it to be a happier person.
As for doctors I go once a month or so for blood counts. Coming up soon I have to go up to
Tampa for a scan to check on my status, but other than that I'm doing really well. I'm going to
go back on chemotherapy, the last protocol they have that I haven't tried. The chemo isn't
aiming to cure it though, because the belief right now is that it can't be cured, but hopefully it
will extend my time for maybe a year or even two.
What are some of your favorite activities that you do?
--- I love to golf! Going out on the course with nature and the sun is my favorite, especially with
my dad and brothers. Also anytime I'm with Brianna I'm a happy person. I love her so much,
I'm truly blessed to have her in my life. Other than that I like doing anything with my family,
spending time together, even if that means just watching TV.
Has this disease affected or prevented you from doing any of the activities that you like to
do?
--- Occasionally my stomach gets kind of messed up but other than that I'm still able to do
everything that I want. My back pain is under control and the doctor just said today that I'm
doing extremely well with my energy level. Better than he'd imagined ever. So in the long run I
haven't been losing energy. I'm the average kid: I get up after 5 hours of sleep to go to school,
maybe take an hour nap after, and hang out all day.
I heard about the Gregory Weber Lang Scholarship..that is really neat...what are the details
on that...how did you decide to do something like that?
--- It was my mom's idea and I thank her so much for helping to leave my legacy with the
world. What most people need to know about it is that you must be a senior, currently at Gulf
Coast High School (It'll be opened to others in the future), with a GPA of at least 2.5. The
applicant must have had or be going through a traumatic experience in their life or a family
members that has affected their views. The winner will receive the first scholarship presented
by me in person of $1500. Runner-ups may receive something as well, we'll have to see.
People we pass every day are going through something rough that might not show to
everyone else around them. My scholarship has turned into more than that. It's now a
foundation that gives money to pediatric cancer research to help find cures and better
techniques at treating and preventing cancers.
